El Niño Proofing Your Property

Getting Ready for Torrential Downpours

Predictions are abounding for the El Niño weather phenomenon this coming fall and winter.

After a long drought and focus on water conservation in California and the Southwest, thinking about how to deal with excess water may not be at the forefront of everyone’s mind. However, now is the time to think about how to prepare properties to literally weather the storm.

A few things to consider:
1. Roofs – Look for misalignment and warping as clues to weak spots. Make sure your roof ventilation systems are properly covered.
2. Gutters & Sump Pumps – Clogged gutters are the #1 problem leading to water intrusion. Make sure gutters, drain gates, sump pumps and other drainage systems are clean of debris in order to handle excess rainwater.
3. Rain Friendly Parking – How can your parking areas be more customer or client friendly? Covered parking is ideal, but not always possible. Areas which collect heavy puddles can be cumbersome for people to walk through. Asphalt repair can be done now, as well as stocking up on sandbags for later.
