HVAC systems not only control temperature, regulate humidity and circulate air, but they filter too. When functioning well, they reduce pollutants, including viruses in the air. While there isn’t any current evidence that air ducts transmit viruses, particles can remain airborne for hours.
Standard HVAC filters capture dust and particles. However, a high-quality one will be dense enough to catch smaller particles, such as mold spores, pollen, and certain bacteria and viruses. So what filter has the density to be most effective? The HEPA filters can capture up to 99.97% of particles associated with viruses. However, these don’t work efficiently with all systems, and that can cause more wear and tear over time. The right HVAC filter for your property depends on many factors, such as location, existing equipment, type of facility, and your goals for your property.
While nothing may offer foolproof protection against viruses and other pollutants, upgrading your HVAC system may be a smart step towards making your property safer for people. OSHA notes that insufficient HVAC maintenance is one major cause of poor-quality indoor air. So at the very least, maybe it is time to schedule an inspection and maintenance.
